MAKERSPACES: GYMS FOR CREATIVES

What would you make if you could have your own laser cutter or CNC mill? Or, if you could just have a space to make a bunch of saw dust? Instead of purchasing the equipment or renting your own space, consider the option of a makerspace membership. A makerspace is a shared workspace, and is sort of like a gym for creatives - it's a place where you can get access to a bunch of tools without having to own them, in exchange for a membership or use fee. If you're trying to start your own skateboard building business (or any other business which has you producing a physical product), a makerspace can save you time and money by giving you access to the tools you need without having to purchase them yourself. Another benefit of makerspaces is that they attract a collaborative and supportive community of makers, artists, and entrepreneurs focused on growing and helping each other.

Some of the tools a makerspace can get you access to include:

Laser cutters
3D printers
CNC milling machines
Woodworking equipment
Welders
Electronics prototyping equipment

In San Diego, there are several makerspaces available to join. If you live outside of San Diego, do an internet search for "makerspace" and your town.
